This story was written as a collaborative venture by soon to be unemployed NASA engineers taking a semester long writing seminar at a major Florida university. The termination of the Space Shuttle program required a substantial reduction in the engineering staff. The students in the seminar were preparing themselves for jobs in the civilian sector. All had engineering degrees or advanced science degrees. None intended to be creative writers. They enrolled in the seminar to loosen up their writing styles - to break free of the science/tech format which was a requisite of their previous work.
Several proposed topics were presented,. Students were required to submit a weekly anonymous contribution of at least 1000 words to either an adventure story, a detective story, a romance, or a sex story file on our classroom computer. Each student used a self-selected code to assure anonymity. The sex story file elicited the most interest and was by far the longest.
The file was open for all the seminar students to read and at the end of each week the style of story and the quality of writing, but not the content, was discussed in class.
Each story file started with several seed paragraphs and plot. The contributors could modify the plot and advance the story as they desired. The sex story was based on a ten year old Kristen’s Archive story “Ad Astra Per Aspera” written by Sakka. The premise was that disease decimated the entire male population of a starship and that a handful of surviving boys are called on to help repopulate the vessel.
There were twelve students in the seminar, seven men and five women, ranging in age from 24 to 38. I had no idea what their sexual preferences were, although their biases might become apparent from their contributions. The first few chapters of the story were not particularly original. Indeed, the description of the starship was strongly influenced by their actual work experience. But after a while they got into it and started generating original material.
When the story was completed, it was edited only to clean up the grammar and spelling and to smooth transitions between segments. No alterations in content or plot were made. The story is curiously analytic and descriptive for porn. But remember, these were engineers, not poets.
