Lavinia taught oral sex for six months, and at the end of that period, she agreed with Matilda to change classes with her, partially for her own benefit and yet, primarily, just to break the growing boredom of routine. Passes into the city had been made available to them almost immediately after the dream testing period, but they had no real desire to take advantage of this privilege. After the class changes, however, the doctor suggested they use their passes and go back into the city, if for no other reason than to acquaint themselves a little with the world they would be moving into. There would be no unnecessary strain as the passes were stamped by state officials and affixed with a notice that the bearer was not responsible for complying with sexual demands made by a citizen, and it was left to the patient’s discretion whether or not he would engage in sex with anyone. It was under these conditions that Lavinia and Matilda, after all the months elapsed since their last abortive visit to the city, decided to return.

On a Friday evening, the doctor and Mrs. Hatchett sent one of the other instructors into town to buy reasonable clothing for Lavinia and Matilda. The clothes were tried, found to be satisfactory, and after the doctor gave them enough money to see them through the weekend, they went into town on a small supply bus which made regular trips back and forth between the institute and the city.

“Well, the place certainly looks different during the day,” Matilda remarked as they stepped off the bus and merged with the thronging pedestrians and shoppers on one of the main avenues.

“Yes, I’ll say!” Lavinia exclaimed. “Look at these people! They’re all rushing around like the most urgent business was at hand. They look to me like they’re under some kind of terrible strain!”

They went into a coffee shop and sat at a small table next to the sidewalk. They watched the people, and they ordered soft drinks. Occasionally, they exchanged intimate smiles, and everything seemed to be going fine for them. Once, a short, heavy man in a rumpled blue business suit stopped and gazed at them for a moment, then approached their table.

“You want to go to a licensed party?” he asked. “No,” Matilda said softly, “We don’t!” An expression of shock and disbelief passed over the man’s face. Lavinia reached into her purse and handed him the pass she had been given. He looked at it, scowled, then read the statement that excused them from participation.

“A couple of nuts, eh!” he said bitterly, and turned and waddled down the street. Matilda laughed.

When they had finished their drinks, they went to a nearby newsstand and bought a newspaper.

“Oh, listen to this!” she said, taking Lavinia’s arm and leading her off the sliding sidewalk so they could stand out of the stream of traffic without being jostled.

She read from an article on the first page: “ ... There is in our city an underground movement whose members refuse to acknowledge their normal sex drives. They maintain that an individual may have, without being sick, a preference of partner and style, and that it is their constitutional right to refuse an invitation by someone they do not know, or someone who may ask them to do something they don’t really care for. We have had difficulty with these social misfits before, and everyone knows that Doctor Haight of the nearby institute has filled the courts with what he calls test cases, to try the constitutionality of our laws which provide mandatory sexual gratification for everyone. Dr. Haight, considered something of a quack by many citizens, is revered by this cult...

“It looks like we have some assistance from the enemy’s ranks,” Matilda laughed. “It goes on to say that the underground members of this cult often go to a certain club on Church Street to discuss the philosophical aspects of the problems, and that so far the city officials have not issued a proclamation concerning them.”

“Church Street,” Lavinia mused. “Well, what do you say? Shall we take a cab?”

A few minutes later, they were getting out of a taxi in front of a dilapidated coffee house on a semideserted street in the slummy section of the city.

“I don’t see any club,” Lavinia said.

“It must be here. We’ll just walk until we see it.”

They didn’t have far to go. They walked about two blocks and finally came to a coffee house with a large sign hanging over the door.

PEGASUS: HOME OF THE BELIEVERS Inside the coffee shop were six or seven men and women, dressed in clothes that were from a period at least a hundred years before, sporting long hair and beards. Without hesitating, the two girls went inside and ordered drinks.

No sooner were they seated with their orders than a young man from a nearby table rose and came to sit with them. He had shoulder-length hair, a full beard, and wore a one-piece garment that covered all but his bare feet. He smiled at them and offered, without speaking, a cigarette which they had just seen him roll in a tiny machine which he had produced from a pocket concealed in his robe.

“What is it?” Lavinia asked.

“Try it and see,” the young man laughed. “It won’t hurt you, and it’s not an aphrodisiac, I swear it.”

They lit the cigarette and smoked it. In a matter of seconds, they felt the effect.

“Why, it’s the same drug the doctor gave us for the dream testing!” Matilda exclaimed.

“Yes, but not nearly so powerful,” Lavinia said. “It’s very mild.”

“Are you from the institute?” the young man asked upon hearing their remark about dream testing.

“Yes,” Lavinia said. “We’re patients. We are here on a weekend pass.

“What are you planning to do when you’re released?” he asked.

Then Matilda told him their story, from the beginning, and as she talked, several other customers in the club came over to stand at the table, listening with great interest. When she had finished the tale, they began to introduce themselves. To the last, they had been members of the staff or patients at the institute.

“We’re winning,” the young man claimed. “Over the past two years, we’ve had a hundred cases come up in the courts. Many of them have established precedents. As soon as we manage to get a case into the highest court, we’ll have really done something.”

“Why haven’t you been able to do it?” Lavinia asked.

“I suppose because we haven’t been able to involve an important enough personage, and because the city’s district attorney, Mr. Cartwright, seems bent on keeping these sex trials out of the high courts.”

They spent the evening talking, and as it approached time for the club to close, they were invited to spend the night at a large house on the outskirts of town where most of the cultists stayed.

That night, they made love with several of the members. But it was a different affair by far than their last in the city. No one suggested or asked for cooperation. They simply came together, spontaneously, and did what each sincerely wanted to do for the other. It was during this long night that Lavinia conceived her plan.

The next morning, they were driven back into town by the first young man they had spoken to at the Pegasus. He let them off in the most elite residential district, as Lavinia requested. After giving them instructions and a telephone number to call in case they wanted to renew their acquaintance with the cultists, he drove away.

“What on earth prompted you to come here?” Matilda asked.

“I looked a name up in the phone directory last night,” Lavinia said. “I have an idea, come on.”

They walked until Lavinia found the place they were looking for. It was a large fenced estate, with a guard at the entrance of the driveway. A huge three-story house sat away from the street, surrounded by landscaped gardens and trees.

“Whose place is this?” Matilda asked.

“Mr. Cartwright’s, the district attorney!” Lavinia said. “I just wanted to make sure I knew where it was. I think you and I will be coming back here soon.”

Matilda could see that Lavinia was unwilling to say any more, so she allowed her to keep silent. They hailed another cab and spent the rest of their weekend doing typical tourist things in the city.

The remainder of the girls’ term at the institute passed rapidly. They taught their classes and became involved with the doctor until they had learned his philosophy well. By the time their sentences expired, there wasn’t a patient in the institute who did not react with sadness to their departure.

“I almost hate to see you leave,” the doctor said as they sat in their room talking, surrounded by suitcases.

“It’s sad for us, too,” Matilda said. “But we promise to return every so often, and besides, we have work to do. Work you prepared us for.”

“I know,” the doctor smiled. “Still, it won’t be the same around here without you. You know that. I wanted to talk to you before this about your lives on the outside, but I’ve kept putting it off because, I suppose, I didn’t want to face the fact that you were both really leaving. Have you any ideas about what you are going to do?”

“Lavinia says she has a plan, but I haven’t heard it yet,” Matilda said. “I trust her so I will wait. I’m willing to go along with whatever she has in mind. We will find some way to use what you’ve taught us, and as we told you, we made friends with the underground on our last visit to the city. We shouldn’t have any trouble establishing ourselves.”
