When Cindy finally awoke, the sun was shining brightly outside. Groggily, she wiped the sleep from her eyes, yawning at the same time.

“Hi! Glad you’re awake. Boy, you were really out of it.”

Janie had just walked into the living room from another part of the house. She was smiling exuberantly at Cindy.

“Good morning,” Cindy said, coming fully awake.

“You want some breakfast?”

“Sure, it sounds good,” Cindy said, pulling herself up to a sitting position.

“If you want to wash up, the bathroom’s that way,” said Janie.

“Thanks. Where’s my duffel bag?”

“Oh, John put it in the closet, there. I’ll get it for you.”

While Cindy stood up, Janie walked over and opened a closet door. Reaching inside, she pulled out Cindy’s bag.

“Here you go. How do you like your eggs?”

“Oh, whatever’s easiest.”

Cindy picked up her duffel bag and headed into the bathroom. Checking her pants, she made sure that the twenty was still there. She felt immediately guilty. These people weren’t like Rip and his friends. They were taking her in. They were feeding her. And they hadn’t asked for a single cent.

After washing up and changing into some fresh clothes, Cindy left the bathroom and walked into the kitchen, the twenty in her hand.

“Here,” she said, handing it to Janie.

“What’s that for?”

“Well, I mean, you’re taking me in and feeding me and everything. I just want to contribute, that’s all.”

Janie looked at Cindy and smiled. “Hey, you don’t have to do that. Do you have any more?”

“No. I was broke when I left L.A. Some guy on the road gave it to me.”

“Listen, you keep it until you’ve got a little more. Don’t forget, we’ve got a concert tonight, and you’ll need some bread for that.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, listen, it’s all right. John’s got some deals going. He does all right. So save your bread, okay?”

“Well, okay,” said Cindy.

Together, the two girls sat down at a small table and ate their eggs. Cindy had not eaten for two days, and it tasted damn good. She could have used more, but she didn’t want to make a pig out of herself, since it was free.

“You still hungry?”

“No, I’m fine,” Cindy lied. “It was great, thanks.”

“Come on, let’s get the dishes done real quick before John gets back. I’ll wash, you dry.”

“Just like back home,” Cindy said.

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Say, where’s John?” Cindy asked, quickly wiping a dish dry.

“He’s out scoring some bread. He should be back soon.”

“Have you known him long? I mean, are you married?”

Janie laughed. “Oh, no, nothing like that. We’re just living together. Actually, we used to go to school together.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“Yeah, it got so we couldn’t take it anymore, so we just split, and started setting up house here. That was about two years ago.”

“Gee, that’s nice. Are you sure you don’t mind my being here? I mean, I don’t want to be intruding.”

“Hell, no,” Janie said, smiling. “I really dig you. I mean, you’re all right. The way you offered your only twenty bucks. Not too many people would do that. I mean, most people would stay as long as the freebies lasted, and then they would split.”

Cindy felt embarrassed.

“Hey, anybody home?” John called, interrupting the conversation, to Cindy’s relief. “In the kitchen, honey,” Janie yelled.

“How are you doing?” John said, walking over and kissing her on the cheek.

“Did you score?”

“A little bit. Enough to get us through till the end of the week.”

“That’s cool. I told Cindy about the concert tonight.”

“Great. Can you make it?”

“Yeah, I’d love to go, if you’re sure I won’t be in the way.”

“Now, come on,” Janie said, scowling. “We’ve been through all that.”

“Yeah, I know,” Cindy admitted.

“What’s this all about?” asked John, looking puzzled.

“Oh, Cindy thinks she’ll be in the way here. I told her how silly that was. Would you believe, she’s got exactly twenty bucks, and she wanted to give it to me to pay for her staying here.”

“No!” John was aghast. “You know, I could tell you were all right when I first saw you,” he said, turning to Cindy.

“Well, the dishes are all done. What do you say we go out to the park, or something?” Janie suggested.

“Oh, I’d like that,” Cindy said.

“All right, the park it is.”

Together, the three of them walked out of the apartment and down the stairs into the street. To Cindy, it seemed that the whole scene during the day was completely different. She could see everything so much better.

“Hey, man, how are you doing?” John asked, walking past some dude walking a dog.

“Cool, Johnny, cool,” the guy said.

“Where’s the park?” Cindy asked.

“Just about three blocks up,” John said. “I think you’ll dig it. There’s always something doing up there.”

“Oh, yeah?” Cindy commented.

“Yeah,” Janie interjected. “Would you believe it? One day, John Lennon, you know, from the Beatles, was just walking around with a guitar, and he put on a concert. Right there in the park. I couldn’t believe it.” Janie stopped to catch her breath.

“Really?” Cindy was wide-eyed.

“Yeah, like I said, it was unreal.”

“Wow!”

The entrance to Golden Gate Park was on Stanton Street. Clustered around the gate were a number of people. Like most of the people on Haight Street, they were just standing around, waiting.

“Spare change?” asked one, looking at John.

“No, man. Not today.”

“Hey, this is really nice,” Cindy said as they walked in through the entrance and down a grass-surrounded walkway.

The park was filled with people. Some were walking. Some were sitting on benches. The feeling was completely peaceful. Cindy took a deep breath. The sun felt warm and good. The grass looked soft and green.

John took her hand in his. Cindy squeezed it tightly. On his other side, Janie walked with her arm around his waist. No hassles. No problems. Peace.

Leaving the walkway, the three of them walked to the top of a rolling, grassy knoll.

“Ah, this looks good,” John said, dropping to the ground.

Simultaneously, Janie and Cindy fell on either side of him and lay down.
