San Francisco didn’t seem too much different from Los Angeles. They were driving through what looked like the downtown area. The street sign said Market Street. She wondered how long it would take her to get her bearings.

“Haight Street’s about a mile up,” Jeff said.

“It doesn’t sound very nice,” Cindy said, her voice soft and trembling slightly.

“Oh, it’s not bad. Like I said, that’s where everyone lives.”

The brightness of the main downtown area was behind them now. Market Street was dark. Cindy tried to catch the names of the side streets. A minute later, Jeff slowed the car and made a right. Haight Street.

“It’s awfully dark,” Cindy observed.

“All of the action is up by the park.”

“The park?”

“Yeah, Golden Gate Park.”

Cindy watched as the street slowly grew brighter and more crowded with people walking. To Cindy, it was like a Sunset Strip in miniature.

“Say, this doesn’t look bad at all,” she said, feeling better at the sight of the crowds.

“Naw, you’ll be okay,” Jeff said, pulling over to the curb. “You got that twenty?”

“Right here,” Cindy said, patting her pocket. “And thanks.”

“Hey, good luck,” Jeff said.

“Thanks. I’ll need it.”

Getting out and closing the door behind her, Cindy stood on the curb for a minute, watching as Jeff drove off. Around her, she could hear the sounds of the city. It was all here, and taking a deep breath, Cindy started walking up the street, looking at everything, yet at the same time, not really seeing anything. Passing what looked like a theater, she heard shouting and music coming from inside. Smiling, Cindy felt herself relaxing.

“Just like L.A.,” she muttered.

After walking for a couple of blocks, the duffel bag started to feel heavy. Setting it down on the sidewalk, she stopped to catch her breath. It occurred to her then that she didn’t have a place to stay that night, and she didn’t want to blow the twenty on a motel.

She would need it to eat until something turned up. She had heard about crash pads in L.A., and she wondered if they had the same thing in San Francisco.

“You just get in?”

Cindy turned, startled. A bearded guy with a bright gold earring in his left ear was standing beside her.

“Huh?”

“You just get in?” he repeated, looking down at her duffel bag.

“Yeah, I did,” Cindy said. “My name’s Cindy.”

“People here call me Uncle John. Got a place to stay?”

“No. Do you know a place?”

“Yeah, if you want, you can stay with my old lady and me until you get straight.”

“Hey, thanks. I was starting to think I would be sleeping in the park, or something.”

“Come on.”

Bending down, he picked up her duffel bag. “Thanks,” Cindy said, following him down the street.

“Where’d you come from?”

“L.A.”

“Why’d you split?”

“No reason. I just got tired of it.”

“That’s a cool reason. Good as any, at least. Got any bread?”

The memory of what had happened to her money in L.A. was still fresh in her mind. All she had now was the twenty, and she didn’t want to lose that.

“No. I’m busted.”

“Too bad. Well, there are all kinds of things a chick can do for bread up here.”

“Begging?” Cindy asked, sounding a little too snide.

“That’s for the dudes who can’t do anything else.”

Cindy regretted her tone of voice.

“Do you smoke?”

“Grass? Yeah, sure.”

“Cool. We’ll have a party tonight.”

It was only three blocks to John’s place. When they walked inside, a sharp-looking redhead was sitting on a pillow in the middle of the living room. The smell of grass was thick in the room.

“Hey, Janie?”

The girl turned her head and looked at the two of them.

“Hi, baby,” she said, her voice soft, her eyes dreamy-looking.

“Listen, this is Cindy. She’s going to be staying with us for a while.”

“That’s cool.”

“Cindy, that’s Janie,” John said, taking off his coat. “I’ll put your things in the closet.”

“Come on, Cindy. Have a seat,” Janie said, patting a pillow next to her.

Smiling, Cindy walked over to the girl and sat down.

“Thanks for letting me stay here.”

“Don’t worry about it. You smoke?”

“Yeah, sure.”

Janie took a burning joint from the ash tray and handed it to Cindy. “Here, baby, enjoy yourself.”

Taking the cigarette, Cindy put it to her lips and inhaled deeply.

“Mmmm, good stuff,” she said, after releasing the smoke from her lungs. She handed it back to Janie.

“No, keep it. I’m already zonked on my ass.” Smiling happily, Cindy took another puff. Just then, John walked into the living room, carrying a bottle of red wine.

“Thought you might be thirsty,” he said.

“My mouth is a little dry.”

“It probably is. That’s some good shit you got there,” he said, pouring some wine into a glass for her. “You want some, Janie?”

“Sure, why not. Thanks.”

After handing her a filled glass, John poured some for himself. Together they raised their glasses in a toast and drank the wine down.

“This is good,” Cindy said.

“Glad you like it. Any of that joint left?”

“Sure, here,” she said, handing it to him, watching as he inhaled. Afterward, Janie took it from his fingers and pulled another hit from it. Cindy was next, and then it was gone. Her head was buzzing pleasantly. She felt wonderfully light. She sipped the wine.

Getting up, John slid a tape into the player. Immediately, the room was bathed in the soothing sound of a sitar. Before sitting down, he turned all the lights off, except for one bulb glowing red.

“That’s nice,” Cindy said.

“Yeah, it’s good for the head,” John said, sitting back down on the floor beside Janie.

It was a wonderful feeling of family. Cindy closed her eyes while the smoke inside her lungs did its job. When she opened them again, Janie and John were kissing each other passionately. With their mouths slightly apart, she could see their tongues licking slowly against each other. Janie moaned softly and pressed her hand to John’s crotch, squeezing his rapidly bulging cock.
