The following day, Cindy woke up around noon. As soon as her eyes opened, she hopped out of bed and hurriedly washed and dressed. She had things to do.
“Well, you certainly look happy,” Janie commented when Cindy walked into the kitchen. “I thought you would be sleeping until four, at least.”
“No, not today,” Cindy said, smiling. “Say, you want to go shopping with me today?”
“What are you going to get?”
“Groceries for one thing. Clothes for another. Why not come with me? I’ll even pop for lunch.”
“Well, you just made me an offer I can’t refuse.”
Happily, the two girls left the apartment and walked to the bus stop. “We’ll stop off at a market on the way back. I want to buy three of the biggest, juiciest steaks for tonight, and some wine.”
“Sounds like you just want to go all out.”
“You bet. I’ve been living with nothing for a long time now. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”
On the bus downtown, Cindy was singing all the way. She was infectious. People seeing her smiled. She smiled back, her heart beating happily inside her chest. It was a good day and she had Janie to thank.
Lunch came first. In the dining room at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, one of the best in the city, Cindy scanned over the menu and decided on the broiled lobster tail. Janie had the same.
When it finally arrived at their table, Cindy’s mouth was watering. Eating slowly, she relished every bite. It had been a long, long time since she had eaten that good, and she knew that if things continued to go as they did last night, it would soon become routine. She couldn’t believe how fast a person could grow up in the street. She certainly didn’t feel sixteen.
